چکیده

Our aim in this paper is to explain some of the results about interacting particle systems to someone who has no knowledge of probability theory but unders tands w h a t it means to flip a coin wi th a probabili ty p of heads. In what follows we will discuss five models. The last three are h inted at in the title. The first two are simpler systems that will be useful in explaining the others. then ~n is the set of wet sites on level n when there is a source of fluid at (0,0). The model above is appropriate (if somewhat oversimplified) if one is thinking about the movemen t of oil in the ground pulled down by the force of gravity. With the last interpretation in mind, it is natural to ask if the material is porous enough for the fluid to penetrate it, or (letting P denote probability) "Is P(~, ~ 0 for all n) > 0?" When ~ ~ 0 for all

Crabgrass, Measles, and Gypsy Moths: an Introduction to Modern Probability

This paper is based on a talk given at the Annual Meeting of the American Mathematical Society in San Antonio, Texas, January 21-24, 1978. The subject is interacting particle systems and the aim of the paper, like that of the talk, is to explain some of the results in this area to someone with no knowledge of probability theory except for an understanding of what it means to flip a coin with pr...

Chaos in a Spatial Epidemic Model

We investigate an interacting particle system inspired by the gypsy moth, whose populations grow until they become sufficiently dense so that an epidemic reduces them to a low level. We consider this process on a random 3-regular graph and on the d-dimensional lattice and torus, with d ≥ 2. On the finite graphs with global dispersal or with a dispersal radius that grows with the number of sites...

Dynamics of a plant-herbivore model with applications to gypsy moth outbreaks

We formulate a novel host parasite model to study the dynamics of the outbreak of the gypsy moths. Assuming a Ricker dynamics for the host population and an infestation that takes place after the growth limitations take effect in the plant dynamics, a two dimensional discrete model of the leaf mass and the gypsy moths mass is constructed. The parameter space is determined by the growth rate of ...

DNA Barcoding of Gypsy Moths From China (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) Reveals New Haplotypes and Divergence Patterns Within Gypsy Moth Subspecies.

The gypsy moth from Asia (two subspecies) is considered a greater threat to North America than European gypsy moth, because of a broader host range and females being capable of flight. Variation within and among gypsy moths from China (nine locations), one of the native countries of Asian gypsy moth, were compared using DNA barcode sequences (658 bp of mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 [COI]...

Identification and characterization of a RAPD-PCR marker for distinguishing Asian and North American gypsy moths.

The recent introduction of the Asian gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) into North America has necessitated the development of genetic markers to distinguish Asian moths from the established North American population, which originated in Europe. We used RAPD-PCR to identify a DNA length polymorphism that is diagnostic for the two moth strains. The polymorphism maps to an autosomal locus with codo...
